Since 1985 .... And so it starts 1985 - The typical Personal Computer operates at 4.77-MHz, and sells for about $5,000. Lotus Development releases Lotus 1-2-3 ver.2 and Microsoft launches MS Word 1.0 and unveils the first version of MS Windows. 1986 - Intel introduces the 80386 processor, a real barnburner at 16-MHz. Microsoft first sells shares to public, Bill Gates quickly becomes the worlds youngest Billionaire. Ashton-Tate ships its one-millionth copy of dBASE. 1987 - IBM Introduces the IBM PS/2 model of Personal Computers, with Microchannel architecture. Compaq builds its one-millionth PC and Microsoft ships DOS 3.3 and MS Works for DOS. IBM and Microsoft co-release OS/2. 1988 - Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP Deskjet inkjet printer. Spectrum Holobyte introduces Tetris, the first software program imported from the Soviet Union. Microsoft releases DOS 4.0 and ships Windows/286 and Windows/386. 1989 - An estimated 60 million personal computers are in use in North America. Creative Labs introduces the SoundBlaster, an 8-bit mono audio card. Intel showcases its new 80486 processor, integrating a math-coprocessor. 1990 - 486 based systems operating at 33-MHz hit the market running the new Windows 3.0. AMD introduces its clone CPU of Intel's 386 at speeds of 20, 25 & 33-MHz. U.S. Robotics introduces the Courier v.32bis modem. 1991 - IBM sells off its printer and typewriter division, the company Lexmark is born. Microsoft releases DOS 5.0 with new utilities. Intel introduces its 50-MHz 486 chip. Low cost CD-ROM drives are introduced at sub $600 prices. 1992 - One million copies of the new Windows 3.1 are sold in the first 50 days. IBM introduces its ThinkPad laptop computer, while for the first time in its history reports a year-end loss. HP introduces the LaserJet 4. 1993 - Intel introduces the first Pentium CPU operating at 60-MHz. Microsoft now has 25 million licensed Windows users, and introduces the first Multimedia Encyclopedia - MS Encarta. 1994 - Microsoft releases DOS 6.22 and Windows NT. Beta copies of Windows 95 circulate the industry. Novel buys WordPerfect Corporation for US$850 million. AMD introduces the 486DX80-MHz CPU. Commodore declares bankruptcy. 1995 - The World Wide Web is rocketed into public view. Microsoft ships Windows 95 - sells 1 million copies in 4 days. IBM completes its acquisition of Lotus Development Corporation. Seagate and Conner Peripherals merge. 1996 - Corel Purchases WordPerfect from Novel for US$180 million. Microsoft ships the 30 millionth copy of Windows 95. Intel introduces the 200-MHz Pentium Processor. IOMEGA sells its 1-millionth Zip drive. 1997 - Pentium II and MMX hit the street and 56k modems take the industry by storm. AMD introduces the K6 processor with MMX technology. The average desktop hard drive now has 2 Gigabyte storage capacities. 1998 - Compaq announces it will buy Digital Equipment for US$9.6 billion. Intel unveils their low cost Celeron CPU. Microsoft starts shipping Windows 98. Microsoft becomes the worlds most valuable company at US$261.1 billion. 1999 - Intel introduces the Pentium III and AMD their Athlon CPU's - starting the MHz wars. 800-MHz is reached by years end. Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 5.0. The Y2K bug is on everyone's mind. Microsoft's anti-trust battle wages on. 2000 - The wide spread Y2K fears do not materialize. The first 1-GHz processor speed is reached. Microsoft tweaks Windows 98 to create Windows ME (Millennium). Michael Cowpland resigns as CEO from Corel Corporation. 2001 - Intel ships the first Pentium 4 processor, running at 1.4-GHz; by September Intel sells 2-GHz CPU's. Microsoft enters the game console market with its Xbox. CD-RW burners have become commonplace. Microsoft releases Windows XP. 2002 - LCD flat screen monitors are the hot market item. The average PC is now nearing 2-GHz speeds. Intel introduces the Pentium IV at 2.4-GHz. IBM scientists create data storage equivalent to 200 CD's on a surface the size of a postage stamp. 2003 - Processor speeds of 3-GHz are surpassed. High speed Internet access now widely available.
